I did google it but it just came up that it was Ophiuchus The Serpent Bearer and the fact that it’s ancient greek but nothing about an alignment!

The Western zodiac has 12 signs because we adopted the Gregorian calendar which has 12 months. Astrologers wanted the signs of the zodiac to be evenly distributed.

There are also a few other theories (e.g. influence of Christianity).

Are you a dragon only if you are born after 23rd January 2012 or 4th February 2012?

Hi, on this website http://www.chinesefortunecalendar.com which seems quite exhaustive they say the following:

In China’s time zone, the first day of the Water Dragon Year is February 4, 2012, because February 4th, 2012 is the first day of Tiger month and the Tiger month is the first month of the year in Chinese Fortune-Telling Calendar system.

In the Chinese Fortune-Telling calendar, the first day of the first month, Tiger month, is called “Start of Spring”, which is when the sun enters the 315th degree on the tropical zodiac. In the China’s time zone, the time of the Start of Spring is at Feb-04 18:23. So the first day of the Black Dragon year 2012 is on 04-Feb-12.

The Chinese New Year Day of 2012 is on January 23, 2012. It’s 12 days early before the first day of the astrology calendar in 2012. There is a very common misconception that the astrology animal signs begin on the Chinese New Year day in many Internet sites. Actually, the Astrology animal signs begin from the Start of Spring, the first day of the astrological year. For example, if a baby was born after the Chinese New Year Day in January 2012, then its animal sign is the Rabbit, not Dragon, because the birthday is before the Start of Spring. If you are still confused about your animal sign, we have an Animal Sign page for people to verify their Chinese birth year animal signs.

But all the other websites mentions 23rd January. Who to trust? Any expert in Chinese Zodiac out there?
well actually this website seems to say as well that it’s not the year who represent your sign but the day of the year…

You’re a dragon if you hang around with Twilight Sparkle all the time. Spike is best dragon!

In my study of the Chinese astrology I have never heard of this. The Chinese zodiac follows the Lunar calender. Generally from the beginning of the Chinese New Year represents the beginning of a new zodiac as well. In calculating the Four Pillars even, the year animal is always dependent on that of the date of the New Year for those born in January or February. I find it interesting that even though this site does mention that an animal starts at the beginning of Spring, it still marks a person’s year animal based on the Chinese New Year date.

But interestingly enough, Shelly Wu, an excellent author on the subject of Chinese astrology, also uses the start of Spring as the head of the new year.

That site is correct.

Jan 23 is the first day of new years. But the start of spring is feb 4. And this day is usually always around the same time every year (feb 3-4). However, there may be a larger difference on the date of “new year”.

You are a dragon if born on feb 4 – to be exact, feb 4 at 6:23pm China’s time zone. That’s when rabbit passes the “duty” onto the dragon.
